Who are the greatest Masters champions of all time? There have been a number of great golfers to compete for Masters titles. Here’s our list of the best of the best.

Greatest Masters Champions

• Jimmy Demaret – A three-time Masters champion, Demaret won 31 PGA Tour events in a long career between 1935 and 1957. Actually, Demaret was the first person to notch three Masters championships.
• Ben Hogan – Many golf fans consider Hogan to be one of the all-time greats. Notable for his impact on golf swing theory and his ball-striking ability, Hogan won the Masters in 1951 and 1953.
• Phil Mickelson – Having earned the appropriate nickname of “Lefty” (he plays left-handed), Mickelson is a three-time Masters winner (2004,2006, 2010).
• Byron Nelson – Active from 1935-46, Nelson is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time despite retiring from active play at the age of 34. “Lord Byron” is a two-time Masters champion.
• Jack Nicklaus – The Golden Bear is the greatest of all Masters champions. Nicklaus is a six-time Masters winner, the record for Masters titles. His first Masters win came in 1963, and his final one came at the age of 46 in 1986.

• Arnold Palmer – After turning pro in 1954, Palmer proceeded to become one of the most popular and successful golfers of all time. Known as “The King”, Palmer is a four-time Masters champion, having won in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964. In addition to his success of the fairway, Palmer was a successful businessman and had a loyal fan base known as “Arnie’s Army”. Also, Palmer was able to commercialize his favorite drink– equal parts sweetened iced tea and lemonade– named, appropriately, the “Arnold Palmer”.
• Gary Player – the only non-American on this list, Player hails from South Africa. In addition to being a three-time Masters winner (1964, 1974, 1978), Player is also a renowned golf course architect with more than 400 design projects on five continents throughout the world.
• Sam Snead – “Slammin’ Sammy” is a three-time champion (1949, 1952, 1954) of the Masters. In particular, both opponents and fans of Snead will often credit him with having “the perfect” golf swing.
• Tom Watson – In the 1970s and 1980s, Watson was one of the leading golf players in the world, winning eight major championships, including two Masters titles, in 1977 and 1981.
• Tiger Woods – A five-time Masters champion, Woods is also one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. At the age of 47, there’s a good chance that Woods will surpass Jack Nicklaus for most Masters titles (6).
