Best Punk Band – The Ramones

The Best Punk Band of All Time? Here's Some Candidates

Music historians regard the Ramones as the first punk rock band, helping to establish punk rock as a legitimate musical genre. They did this by touring relentlessly for 20 years and 14 studio albums. Additionally, punk historians credit their July 4th, 1976 concert in London as igniting the U.K. punk scene.

The Best Punk Band – Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols were known for their provocative lyrics, rebellious attitude, and controversial behavior. They were also considered to be the foundational band of the U.K. punk rock scene. Despite releasing just one original album, the band’s influence has been nearly immeasurable. Thus, it came as no surprise that the band refused to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since that’s what punk bands should do.

Best Punk Band – The Clash

The Clash blended punk rock with elements of reggae, ska, rockabilly, and traditional punk. The band was unique in its ability to fuse those musical genres with political and social commentary. For these reasons, the press dubbed the Clash “The Only Band That Matters.”

The Best Punk Band – Minor Threat

Minor Threat helped to establish and popularize the hardcore punk sub-genre, with their fast, aggressive, and social-issues charged music. Additionally, Minor Threat advocated for a “straight edge” and self-reliant lifestyle. They also started their own label (Dischord Records) as teenagers, another pure punk rock move.

Best Punk Band – The Slits

Fans loved the Slits for their feminist lyrics and attitude, which helped to challenge traditional gender roles and inspire a new generation of female punk rockers. Also, The Slits were one of the first punk bands to incorporate dub, reggae, and world music elements into their sound.

Best Punk Band – The Misfits

The Misfits blended punk’s energy and attitude with elements of horror movie themes, creating a unique sound and style that was widely imitated by later punk and metal bands. Overall, the Misfits were a cross between a punk band and a low-budget horror movie.

The Best Punk Band – Bad Brains

The Bad Brains were one of the first bands to blend punk rock with elements of reggae, funk, and heavy metal, helping to pioneer the genre of hardcore punk.
