The best movies action movies of all time encompass several other genres. However, one thing that all action movies share is… well, action. Accordingly, this list of the top movie comedies represents the author’s taste in comedy.

The Best Movies – Action

  • Seven Samurai (1954) – Akira Kurosawa’s epic film that understood an action flick need not be all action, all the time. Farmers exploited by bandits hire a veteran samurai for protection, who gathers six other samurai to join him. Consequently, viewers should consider this film mandatory viewing.
  • The Great Escape (1963) – Directed by John Sturges and starring the ultra-cool Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Charles Bronson. This movie is about Allied prisoners of war helping several of their numbers to escape from an “inescapable” German P.O.W. camp during World War II.
  • Enter the Dragon (1973) – Bruce Lee stars as a Kung Fu master who travels to an island fortress to spy on a drug kingpin. Under the guise of attending a fighting tournament, Lee infiltrates and takes down the kingpin. Also stars Bolo Yeung and Jim Kelly.
  • The Warriors (1979) – After being accused of killing a rival gang warlord, The Warriors must fight from the Bronx to their home turf on Coney Island. Notwithstanding its low-end production values, this movie was a modernized Odyssey.
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) – Written by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg, this film delivered non-stop action. The film is about archaeologist Indiana Jones trying to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis. Certainly a top-shelf movie from an all-star creative team.

  • Hard-Boiled (1992) – The film stars Chow Yun-fat as a tough cop who teams with an undercover agent to scuttle a mobster’s operation. Notably, the film was director John Woo’s last Hong Kong film before his transition to Hollywood.
  • Kill Bill, Vol 1 & 2 (2003, 2004) – I’m listing both movies as a single unit, but either one deserves to be on this list on its own merits. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill is about a former assassin (Uma Thurman) seeking revenge on her ex-colleagues. Of course, this movie features the now-famous Tarantino style of dialogue besides its amazing action scenes.
  • The Raid: Redemption (2011) – In this Indonesian thriller, a S.W.A.T. team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster. Fans and critics consider this movie to have the best action scenes ever recorded.
  • John Wick (2014) – In this non-stop shoot ‘em up, Keanu Reeves stars as the titular ex-hit-man who comes out of retirement. The movie follows John Wick as he tracks down the gangsters that killed his dog and took his car.
  • Atomic Blonde (2017) – A surprisingly good action flick featuring Charlize Theron. Theron portrays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton. She is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent. She must also recover a missing list of double agents and return them to the West.

Wrapping Up: the Best Movies Action

It is virtually impossible to create a list such as this one without rustling a few feathers. However, in my defense, I left several action movies off this list that are more accurately placed in other major genres. For example, war, science fiction, and horror films were specifically left off this list. Regardless, feel free to let me know which
